It's hard to believe more than a year has gone by since our longtime friend and volunteer, Mary Haggerty, passed away. While Mary's death brought much sadness to our council, we're sure that the many Girl Scout accomplishments in 2007 would have made her proud.
Mary's 47 years of service to Girl Scouting included countless hours spent as a Troop Leader, Service Team Chair, Unit Cookie Manager, Association Cookie Manager, QSP representative, and Council Trainer. But perhaps one of her most cherished roles was coordinator of the council's trips to destinations across the globe. Over the years, she provided mentorship to the girls as they planned all the finest details of trips to Hawaii, Australia, Alaska, and Ireland, just to name a few. This included a year or more of planning and countless hours of fundraising with the girls.
Even after her death, Mary's impact on our council continues to run deep. After her passing, we learned that she left our council a generous amount of money that will strengthen us for the future and allow us to continue the work she was so committed to. As a way to honor Mary for her generosity and commitment to opening the world of travel to Girl Scouts, our board has approve the Mary Haggerty Memorial Travel Scholarship. We believe this is a fitting way to honor Mary, as she always encouraged girls to explore places outside their own world.
The scholarship is available to adults and Girl Scouts of all ages and the funds may be used for a Girl Scout travel adventure.
