How long does it take to become a volunteer?
Typically a person is appointed to a volunteer position two weeks after the application is received. One of the main reasons it takes longer is that the references given do not respond in a timely manner. To quicken the process, let the persons know that the appointment process requires their response.
Do I have to commit to a specific schedule?
As a volunteer based organization, we strive to have volunteers select dates and times that work for them. Leaders/Advisors should schedule troop/group meetings based on their availability and that of the girls involved. Volunteers should take into consideration the time required for a position prior to committing. Often there are similar opportunities with varying degrees of time required.
Can fathers volunteer?
Yes, how wonderful for girls to see men and women working cooperatively and having fun. Each volunteer offers girls a different perspective on an experience.
Is it expensive to belong to Girl Scouts?
Members are required to register with the national organization; the current fee for membership is $10. Assistance is available to cover all or some of the cost for those members who request it. There is no fee for required training with the Foothills Council. Also, many Girl Scout units and associations have money to help support the activities of its members. Furthermore, as a volunteer for a nonprofit organization, mileage (at a specific rate), postage stamp, phone calls, stationary and other similar out-of-pocket expenses are deductible on an itemized tax return as charitable donations.
