Why should leaders attend monthly service unit meetings?
Leaders get ideas from other local leaders, updates on planned unit activies their troop can attend, support, information about what the council’s staff is working on, enrichment workshops, and leaders get an opportunity to feel that they are NOT alone in their challenges and become part of a group.
Why is the service unit meeting on the same night as my troop’s meeting?
Maybe the Service unit Chair doesn’t know you meet on that night or maybe that day works best for the majority. If the date cannot be changed, look to see if a troop parent will go to the meeting to represent the troop or maybe a parent will fill in at the troop meeting once a month so the leader or assistant can attend the unit meeting.
What is a Service Unit?
A Service Unit is a school district within the Foothills Council. Each service unit is assigned a number.
What does a Service Unit do?
Most importantly, each Service Unit has a team of volunteers trained and willing to assist their peers in providing girls in the area with a memorable and enjoyable Girl Scout experience. The team of volunteers relies on its members to maintain a Girl Scout presence in the community.
Are all Service Unit team members leaders?
No. As a matter of fact, many team members are not leaders. Some have chosen to stay involved with Girl Scouts in their community after several years as a leader and others enjoy lending organizational and managerial skills to the Service unit without ever being involved directly with a troop.
Can girl members be part of the Service Unit team?
Absolutely! Girls, especially those ages fourteen and older, will gain a great deal of experience participating in Service Unit meetings.
What happens at Service Unit meetings?
Service Unit meetings are held monthly and all adult and older girl members are welcome to attend. These meetings are where Unit events are planned, Unit money is distributed to troops needing assistance, and where members are kept current on local, regional and national Girl Scout news.
